Local Law Firm vs. Out-of-Town Firm

November 29, 2011 by Jane Rooney

All law firms are different just as well as all clients are different. Therefore, before choosing a law firm, it is important to determine what you expect from your lawyer as well as the support staff.

The obvious answer to this question is of course “I want to win my lawsuit”, but in addition to wanting a good attorney, how much does bedside manner mean to you?

Where I work, we are highly focused on the clients and their well-being. We make sure they see doctors, physiatrists, counselors or whatever they may need to feel better. We do not do this because it sounds good in a TV ad, but because we genuinely want our clients to improve whether they need help physically or emotionally.

In addition to that, we know who our clients are. In the bigger law firms, you are usually assigned a client number and you are expected to know who you are calling for. For instance, in our office, all staff members, be it the receptionist, the assistants or the attorneys, know who our clients are and which assistant and which attorney are working on each client’s file. To us it is important that the clients feel valued and we believe knowing the client’s full file, including their personalities, better allows us to represent them properly.

It is hard to specify what the drawbacks of using an out-of-town law firm are since it depends on what you value in a law firm. The obvious drawback would be the need to drive quite a distance to get to your attorney’s office. Another drawback would be that attorney’s lacking knowledge of the local procedures. Finally, the drive time for the attorney to the county in which your law suit is brought could be charged to you. Even if your case is taken on a contingency basis, you may be required to reimburse the attorney for travel time/mileage when your case is settled. When choosing a local attorney, you avoid those extra costs and you can always stop by your attorney’s office if you have a question.

We have always been very proud to be local in Vero Beach and we believe it to be an advantage. We are involved in our community and run in to our clients at the supermarket or the hardware store on the weekends. Feel free to contact us for your free consultation. Rooney & Rooney, P.A.
